People with soft hearts

Recently I was sat with a few brothers when an elderly uncle visited us. I’d seen this uncle before but never met him. I noticed a genuine smile on this uncle’s face. As he entered, he gave a big hug to one of the brothers with us. He knew this brother from before, after he finished with him, he went to each of us one by one and gave us the same big hug, a smile and asked us how we were etc. We spoke for a while, and then he started telling us how happy he was to see us and especially the first brother he met.

He informed us why he was so happy to see him and then he narrated the following hadeeth:

عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ يَزِيدَ قَالَتْ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم: أَلاَ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخِيَارِكُمْ؟ قَالُوا: بَلَى، قَالَ: الَّذِينَ إِذَا رُؤُوا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ

Asma' bint Yazid reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Shall I tell you who is the best of you?" "Yes,," they replied. He said, "Those who remind you of Allah when you see them.” (Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 323)

And then he said three times:

اللهم اجعلنا منهم
(O Allah make us of them)

Each time all of us said ameen but the uncle broke down. There was silence in the room as he repeated the above, becoming very emotional. SubhanAllah, I remember sitting there thinking 1. I wish I could be one of those people, but, more importantly, 2. that Allah would give me such a soft heart like the uncle’s…

People with soft hearts are some of the best people you could ever meet. Sadly, there’s a big shortage of them nowadays…

اللهم اجعلنا منهم
