The Little Explorer’s Guide To: Al-Ula

I’ve written about Al-Ula before and this was my third trip here.  It’s always a pleasure visiting Al-Ula.  Not only is it a beautiful place to visit but it has a sense of serenity to it.  It is small but filled with history and many wonderful places to see and visit.

As you drive in to Al-Ula, you’ll notice the many beautiful mountains along the way.  These are a spectacle in their own right.  The other thing you’ll notice are the lush green palm trees and the many farms along the way.  The people of Al-Ula are generally very pleasant and greet you with a smile so if you did want to enter one of these farms, all it takes is a small greeting and a request for permission to enter.

Inside Al-Ula, you can visit its old fort, climb to the top and just stare at this beautiful city and its surrounding.  Believe me, it’s an awesome sight early in the morning or near sunset in the evening.

Aside from wondering in amazement at the sight around you, you can also read all about Al-Ula and its history on the numerous boards stuck on at the top of the fort.

Lastly, just below the fort is the old Al-Ula city, or what remains of it.  Now known as Al-Ula heritage village.  It’s nice to see the history with your own eyes and to take a walk among these simple houses and markets.

Away from the fort, this year, we visited Jabl Al-Fil, in english: The Elephant Mountain.  You may have, like me, seen photos of this mountain many times online.  It is exactly like the pictures.  So, if a rock that looks like an elephant (from an angle), doesn’t excite you, then this probably isn’t a place for you to visit.  But, I quite liked it.

Costs

There was 4 for of us on this trip and accommodation in Al-Ula worked out to be relatively inexpensive to be honest.  Again, it comes down to your taste and wants but if you’re on a long drive and all you need is a place to sleep and a clean bathroom then you won’t been spending too much.  There are a number of places to eat as well.  Highly recommended.

The Little Explorer's Guide To... aims to give you a taste of some beautiful places I've had the pleasure of visiting.  Check out some of the other posts in the Travel section.  If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below, or, connect with me on social media.
