The Little Explorer’s Guide To: Habala Village

Habala, also known as the ‘Rope’ or ‘Hanging’ village is located in the Asir region.  It is named as such because in the past, it could only be accessed by ropes.  Legend has it that the tribe/s that used to live here, deliberately cut themselves off and made themselves inaccessible during the Ottoman rule.  Whatever the reason, the village is empty today and is now a tourist spot.

Cable cars were introduced in the late 1900’s to take tourists down to the scenic village.  At the top, you are greeted by an awesome sight of huge cliffs looking down at the village.  There are now a couple of shops, a small park and mobile cafes at the top as well.

There are a number of viewing areas freely accessible to all wanting to see the village from the top.  Safety barriers have been places all along the edges so please do respect these.  They are for your own safety.  Unfortunately, both times I went, the cable cars were closed.  For different reasons.  most recent being: renovation work is being carried out and they will open in 2-3 months’ time.

Not sure what to say about this one.  I would maybe wait until the cable cars are up and running again to really enjoy Habala.
