I came across the above quote recently and thought subhan'Allah how true! As humans we can sometimes be SO stubborn. All the evidence in the world could be presented to such people, the most experienced person could be the one giving advice, yet, these people would refuse to even consider an opinion other than what they have drawn up in their own minds.
It reminds me of the Quraish & disbelievers of Makkah. How they would constantly request for signs and when signs were presented, they'd just make up excuses. Take for example the splitting of the moon, yet, even this was not enough for them. Allah (swt) says in the Qur'an:
(And even if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they were to keep on ascending thereto. They would surely say: "Our eyes have been dazzled...'') (15:14-15)
(And even if We had sent down unto them angels, and the dead had spoken unto them...) (6:111)
And many other similar verses. The point is that sometimes we're so busy looking for a certain sign that we tend to ignore hundreds of other signs. We tend to create an understanding of a certain thing in our minds based upon fear, arrogance or incorrect perception and then become stubborn in defending this false reality even in the face of strong evidence suggesting otherwise. So, be flexible, accept advice and accept the fact that you may be right at times and you may be wrong at others, after all, those far greater than you have been wrong in the past so what makes you think that you're so special?
