Decided to check out some sights closer to Riyadh. And there’s quite a few! Something for everyone to be honest, as you’ll see below. As always, photos of the whole journey can be found HERE, scroll to the end.
Sahaba/Shuhada Cemetry, Al-Jubaylah
Buried here are some (not sure of the exact number) of the beloved companions of our beloved Prophet (pbuh). These companions were martyred during the battle of Yamamah against Musaylimah and his army. Among them: Zayrd ibn Al-Khattab (RA), the elder brother of Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA).
Musaylimah, also known as Musaylimah the liar was one of the false prophets at the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). During the Khilafah of Abu Bakr (RA), a battle took place between the Muslimeen and Musaylimah and his men (numbering roughly 40,000). This battle took place in the plain of Aqraba in Al-Yamamah.
The Muslim army was led by Khalid ibn al-Walid (RA). Between 800 - 1200 of the Muslimeen became shaheed in this battle, among them, the sahabi: Zayd ibn Al-Khattab (RA). Zayd (RA) was the elder brother of Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA). Other than he, a number of the early huffadh of the Qur’an were also martyred in this battle. This later led to the order by Abu Bakr (RA) for the compilation of the Qur’an.
Musaylimah and his army were defeated and Musaylimah was killed in part by the spear of Wahshi ibn Harb, the same man who had killed the uncle of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Hamzah (RA). Wahshi had since accepted Islam and regretted his action and wanted to make amends by taking out Musaylimah.
Ushaiqer Heritage Village
Roughly 200KM North West of Riyadh. One of the oldest towns in the Najd region. The historical side of the town has been restored and is a vibrant and lively tourist attraction. It truly is beautiful and you have to visit it to appreciate that fact. Take it from me, if you want a nice day out with family, friends or even by yourself, this is one spot to visit. Especially considering how close it is to Riyadh.
Salbukh Dam
This was a pretty decent discovery. A beautiful little spot very close to Riyadh. There’s not a lot around it and the whole area just outside of it seems to be under development. However, the dam and area immediately next to it is a brilliant place to sit down, relax, have a bbq and enjoy the beautiful breeze. Highly recommended.
Don’t have a lot to write about Thadiq and Huraymila as I only spent a few moments there, but, since they are on the way to and from Ushaiqer, I decided to check them out. They look nice. Would love to pay another visit with more time insha’Allah.
