The Little Explorer’s Guide To: Umm Qays - Jordan

Umm Qays is another beautiful city which also has some Greek Hellenic ruins known as Gadara.  Gadara was considered to be a centre of Green culture in the region and it had a special religious and political status at that time.

Gadara came under Muslim control following the battle of Yarmouk in 636.  Around 747, most of it was destroyed in an earthquake but the city has since been re-constructed to an extent from the ruins and stands in Umm Qays today,

As the city isn’t too far from Irbid, it’s worth stopping over and also seeing the Sea of Galilee and Golan Heights from here.
